In compliance with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, KEXP has prepared a Community Representation Statement for 2024/2025.
KEXP understands that we must expand and improve our efforts to understand and better represent the array of people and cultures we reach. KEXP aims to serve a global community of music lovers, with a focus on representing the demographic diversity of our region, King County, WA.
We are committed to expanding diversity among KEXP’s staff, Community Advisory Board (CAB) and Board of Directors through principles, policies, practices, and accountability. We believe in hiring and retaining a staff that reflects the audience we aim to serve, including diversity of age, race, ethnicity, gender and gender expression, sexual orientation, life experiences, economic status, ability, and geographic backgrounds. We will attract people with varied perspectives and talents, and we will actively embrace all of our cultures, skills, and experiences. KEXP benefits from our employees’ range of unique talents, personalities, and ideas to help us grow toward greater service of our mission. We will provide staff with opportunities for their ideas to thrive, as well as serve our community.
In addition to demographic diversity of staff, CAB and Board, we continue to challenge ourselves to seek out and amplify the music and stories of under-represented communities as it is central to our ability to serve our mission within our broader community.
The tactics we have undertaken in these pursuits include:
Holding regular BIPOC/PGM and Executive Team racial equity meetings, and engagement with external equity consultants, along with bi-monthly gender equity meetings.
Executing a regular review of recruitment, hiring, supervision, promotion, retention, and pay practices to ensure equity.
Employing culturally relevant project managers, graphic designers, hosts and guests for programs and themes celebrating distinct cultures and communities, and ensuring representation of those communities in planning and decision-making for these projects.
Offering Education and internship programs focused on engaging and serving under-invited communities.
Creating music journalism and curatorial storytelling around the intersection of music with identities defined by gender, race, ethnicity, economic status, national origin, and more.
Partnering on events with community nonprofits that support similar missions & values, and share a commitment to equity.
Welcoming community events into the Gathering Space and holding events in communities where we are invited.
Structuring and maintaining our digital music library to give hosts access to a broad representation of cultures and music traditions on-air.
Drafting an accessibility statement and auditing/documenting progress toward meeting web content accessibility standards.
Researching and using the correct pronouns for artists we feature.
Launching new radio programs designed to uphold and represent distinct cultures and communities not previously represented in a significant way on-air -
Eastern Echoes- a new sonic destination to celebrate Asian artists who are shaping the future while honoring the roots that ground them.
The Continent- The Continent’s aim will be to showcase the amazing amount of genres and styles across Africa, from AfroBeats to Amapiano, Soukous to Mbalax.
Sounds of Survivance - spanning the globe with sounds from people whose connection to a land goes back before colonization, and in most cases as far back as time itself.
Looking forward we plan to:
Complete a training program for all staff on the Psychosocial Basis of Equity and Change Barriers.
Improve accessibility in the Gathering Space.
Continue and/or improve programs, processes, policies, and procedures to better utilize staff strengths and better represent our community.
Continue to work toward a staff, CAB, and Board of Directors representation that mirrors King County, Washington.
