Song of the Day: Evil Eyes - Shake the Dust

Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Shake the Dust” by Evil Eyes from their 2013 self-released album, Borderlines.

In 2011, long time friends Greg Mabry and Joe Frabotta made the bold decision to leave their hometown of Nashville and follow their dream to San Francisco. Thanks to their ineffable talent and a vibrant city rich with culture, the two were able to create the quintessential California indie-pop band, Evil Eyes. They released a solid four-song, self-titled EP last year, but the dynamic duo decided to make a few adjustments before dropping the full length album, Borderlines, this summer. The most notable change was the addition of bassist Aleks Bars and drummer Brian DaMert, which really allowed them to expand their already impressive harmonies. The band has eloquently described their sound as "both lean and dark, the music speaks to nostalgia, love lost, and lonely highways." That's a pretty profound declaration, but these four certainly have the artistry to back it up.

The opening track, "Shake the Dust" really sets the tone for this young quartet's promising future. The song has a glittery yet rustic feel that makes Evil Eyes seem like the beautiful lovechild of Fleetwood Mac and The Shins. Whispered vocals and wistful guitar leads take the listener on a dreamy and uplifting four minute journey. Like the lyrics suggest, sometimes you've just got to "shake the dust" and move on.

Since the album's release, Evil Eyes have been performing mostly around the San Francisco area, but it's only a matter of time before these guys head out on a larger tour.
