Next on KEXP's broadcast live from KEX Hostel at Iceland Airwaves was a stellar set from Icelandic band Vök. The band was formed just this year to compete in (and then win) the Icelandic Music Experiments, a competition focusing on helping young and emerging bands advance their careers, much like Seattle's Sound Off! Their music is very atmospheric, and they sound almost like an Icelandic answer to The XX.
They opened their set with a brand-new song, which is as of yet untitled. A beautiful, ethereal piece with a driving beat and shoegazey guitars. Next was "Eg Bid Thin," a dreamy song with floating, distorted guitars and saxophone. The sax, reverby guitars, and synthesized beats all mix together surprisingly well, allowing the saxophone to be prominent without getting too "careless whisper."
They then played "Panache," which really highlights lead vocalist Margrét Rán Magnusdóttir's lovely, breathy voice. "Before" was a more sultry, post-rock-esque number, and "Tension" was a little more pop-ey. "Blind to Others" was a little more synth-driven, and had a faster beat that really got the crowd moving, ending the set on a very high note.
