Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Inside” by Fey Moth from the 2013 self-released single.
Fey Moth - Inside (MP3)
Seattle’s Fey Moth keeps a low profile. In a time when artists seem to flood the internet and the streets (especially telephone poles!) with promotion and release info, this local trio, led by Piper Drake, seems to believe that less is more. Having played a dozen or so shows recently – with the likes of Katie Kate, OCnotes, XVIII Eyes and Wishbeard - and an EP and a couple albums under their belt, Fey Moth recently released a single featuring the track “Inside” and its B-side, “Pudding Sky (Remix)”, mixed at Electrokitty Studios and mastered at the famous RFI studios. On the new single, Fey Moth seems to be aligning themselves with some of the city’s best, albeit at their own comfortable pace and scale.
“Inside”, though, is no wallflower of a song. If the metaphor is a gala dance affair, then picture Fey Moth’s “Inside” as a young woman who walks in with attitude, wearing strange, but beautiful attire, a necklace no one has ever seen before, hair done-up and magnificent. Piper Drake’s voice is present and distant at once, both new and memorable, as it plants itself in your psyche like something you already were familiar with but had never heard. The accompanying music is futuristic but somehow also classically hip-hop infused, with laser sounds and 808 drum beats. “I want you!” Drake sings over and over. And we – the rest present at this gala shindig - feel the same.
Fey Moth is playing March 7th at the Columbia City Theater with Dead Ship Sailing and I Will Keep Your Ghost. For more information visit their website and Facebook page. For now watch, a "sexy music video" for the title track to Fey Moth's 2011 LP, Flesh Foam Bread Bone:
Too stuffed from holiday treats to get up and change the record? Why not put on this 22-minute-long new track from Portland psych-rockers Unknown Mortal Orchestra! Grandma will love it! [Pitchfork]
