Easily one of the best albums of the year so far, Muchacho most fully realizes the ideas, sound and aesthetic that Brooklyn (by way of Alabama)'s Matthew Houck has been developing for the past decade as Phosphorescent. Whether spare, lush, atmospheric or raucously barn-burning, the songs on Muchacho highlight Houck's distinctive voice that will likely become as widely recognizable as those of the country heroes he cribs or covers, like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings. So even though Phosphorescent as a full band already performed a gorgeous set live on KEXP from the Cutting Room Studios NYC back in March, which you can listen to here, we wanted to get them in again, this time at our studio here in Seattle, for a session we could share with you on video to witness the majesty of the new songs -- and as a bonus, Houck and keyboardist Jo Schornikow performed a duet of Jessi Colter song "Storms Never Last" (which she herself sang with husband Waylon Jennings).
