Scene and Unheard: Rose Windows, Giraffage, Indian Wars, King Dude and more!

On any given weekend in Seattle, there are a million amazing shows to see - from jazz sets at coffee shops and orchestras at theaters, to a grunge shows in DIY spaces and major touring acts at any of our larger venues. Maybe this weekend you want to try something new; maybe you heard one song by this small electronic, folk, grunge group that you heard on Audioasis or from a friend; or maybe you’re just tired of what you’ve been previously listening to. Luckily for you, the PNW is ripe with local acts who perform in our city every day. Because we love the amazing diversity of venues, art spaces, producers, bookers, musicians, and talent, we’re going to make a few suggestions. This week we recommend Rose Windows at Sonic Boom Records free show; Giraffage, Mister Lies, and Beat Connection DJs at Barboza; Indian Wars and Wimps at The Comet; Cross, Freak Heat Waves, and Marvelous Good Fortune at Heartland; and King Dude, Into Violence, and Vacation free show at Barboza.

Tuesday June 25th:

In case you hadn't heard, there is a group of new local players in the Sabbath-loving, psych-folk playing, desert wandering crowd (Is that a crowd? I like to imagine they are all friends like a huge band of feather adorned gypsies) that is Rose Windows. The band, who signed to Sub Pop this spring, has released their beautiful debut album, The Sun Dogs today, Tuesday June 25th - and to celebrate they are having a free show at Sonic Boom Records in Ballard tonight. A chance to see this septet transform a regular old record store into a hazy, sun-drunk, mystical shred-space is not to be missed. And cool parents can even bring their kids (with proper ear safety gear, of course) to guarantee they have as good taste as their parents do in music when they are old enough to volunteer at KEXP. Wednesday June 26th:

Odd names of bands abound, but I think the electronic music community wins for frequently engendering the most baffling among them. This week brings two of those thrillingly slow and sexy producers to Barboza. Mister Lies was thoroughly buzzed despite an initial cloak of anonymity - and the 19-year old lived up to his initial dorm room creations with his first album, Mowgli. Mister Lies will be supporting San Francisco drugged-dream sample-based producer Giraffage on tour this summer following the release of Needs in February, which is available for free download. Also featuring the resident Beat Connection DJs, this Decibel curated show will have everything needed to get you dancing, but will probably not be lacking in a space-scape of contemplative emotions that are part and parcel with bedroom electronica. • Friday brings a host of shows on its own, but despite the long list, I ended up recommending Indian Wars. Vancouver-based and possibly based right out of the drunken punk music love woods of the north themselves, Indian Wars have released a new album, Songs From The North, which doesn't exactly sound like you might expect from the title. These aren't dreary northern songs, but upbeat, rambling knee slappers infused with a kind of tongue in cheek punk that seems more appropriate to their current home town. Indian Wars are paired with local favorites Wimps, whose release Repeat on Seattle's End of Time Records was as much fun as their live shows (a weird doll, a bit of screaming, some laughter, no pretension), dirty punks So Pitted, and the hazy bedroom funk of Fuzzy Cloaks -- I can't think of a funner way to spend Friday night. • It's an unusual line-up for an all-ages no bullies, no booze venue on Saturday night, but several Canadian stoner-rock bands will be hitting/hazing up Heartland. Montreal based Cross plays weighty and doom-influenced late-night stoner rock for those among us who fall asleep and have terrible dreams. They'll be supported by Vancouver's serious krautrockin' minimal art group Freak Heat Waves , whose spooky, alienating s/t album is hard to stop listening to when you're in the mood for tracks with titles like "Nausea" and "Correction" and "Instructing". They're playing with Seattle's spritely dramatic Marvelous Good Fortune (last show for a while their Facebook reveals...possibly because several of them are also members of Sick Sad World?), and ambient doom mystery Thunder:Grey:Pilgrim. • Seattle's spooky crooner King Dude is playing a free show at Barboza. The lo-fi recordings of his low warbling voice layered with eerie Americana guitars and born of the devil lyrics makes for some of the cooler sounds to emerge from Seattle's rainy Sundays. This weekend is, of course, Pride Weekend and Nark Magazine is hosting several amazing parties as part of their own festival. This includes the amazing Mykki Blanco and others at Neighbors as well as a carnival at Fred Wildlife Refuge. Find out about that stuff here. Thursday, you can catch the ever poppy Sick Sad World at Heartland with Land of Pines, Experience the Broback, and Love in Mind (all ages). On Saturday, you could catch Portland's Past Desires (as scary sounding as you might imagine) with Stickers and Vivian James at Cairo(all ages). If Rebirth Brass Band is your thing, they'll be over at Hattie's Hat/Sunset/Tractor back lot on Saturday as well.
