Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, selected by Morning Show host John Richards, is “Lose Control” by Brothers In Law, from the 2013 album Hard Times For Dreamers on WWNBB.
Brothers In Law – Lose Control (MP3)
Formed in 2011 in Pesaro, Italy, Brothers In Law are a shoe-gazing pop trio, vacillating artfully between thoughtful guitar strums and energetic, catchy rhythms. Their members – Jack, Nicola and Andrea - released their debut LP in 2013, Hard Times for Dreamers, a slinky 8-song record, after they had a few single and EP releases in the bag. The vocals on the record drone in Technicolor dreams and their simple, yet precise playing has the listener wanting to repeat the record on loop to catch each neuance. Perfect for a drive, a rainy day or turned up in the dance hall, Brothers In Law toe the line between garage band-next-door and anthemic powerhouse.
“Lose Control”, the first track off the band’s new LP, is a slow-cresting, reverb-infused punching start to the 2013 release. Rhythmic and ghostly, the song opens with high-end keys like a spirit in the foreground foretelling the story to come. The trio kicks in with rising harmonies, and then the lead vocals: “Sometimes we lose control of situations...” Think: The Black Keys mixed with a lo-fi Vampire Weekend. The sound leaves lots of room for thought and contemplation of what’s to come on the rest of the record. “Lose Control”, like the other tracks from Hard Times for Dreamers, brings into the focus the idea that everything is spread out.
Having played SXSW this year, Brothers In Law returned to Italy to play a handful of dates. Their tour culminates with a July 20th performance at the “A Night Like This Festival” in Chiaverano, Italy. There are no U.S. dates scheduled as of yet, though there are rumors of New York City shows in the works and one can only hope they grace the Pacific Northwest with some local performances in the near future. Check their Facebook page for future updates, and for now, watch the video for their song "Holy Weekend" from their EP Gray Days:
