Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Everything Revival” by The So So Glos from the 2013 album Blowout on Shea Stadium.
The So So Glos - Everything Revival (MP3)
Like their comrades and frequent touring partners Titus Andronicus, Brooklyn's The So So Glos create raucous, garage-tinged punk rock filled with youthful energy and an unwavering optimism. The band's origins lie in the 1990s, when brothers Alex and Ryan Levine became stepbrothers with Zach Staggers, but the band itself didn't start until 2007, when the trio released their eponymous debut album and added guitarist Matt Elkin to their ranks soon after. Holding true to a DIY ethic, the band books tours and releases records by themselves, and remains a strong local presence in Brooklyn, where they operate an all-ages venue named Shea Stadium. Opening with a Springsteen-esque glockenspiel, the scuzzy track quickly jumps from the Jersey Turnpike into the gutter, rolling around with clanging drums, buzzing riffs, and shouty gang vocals. Through and through, "Everything Revival" is a punk record firmly rooted in the church of Saint Joe, but the song reveals a bigger ambition for the band, one that implies that they're happy playing at (their) Shea Stadium, but aiming for headlining a few nights at (the old) Shea Stadium.
The So So Glos are on tour behind Blowout for the rest of the year, but they haven't announced any plans to trek beyond the Midwest, so keep an eye on their Facebook and website for any touring news. Watch the video for the Blowout track "Son of an American" now:
