Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is "Rebirth" by Yuck from the 2013 album Glow & Behold on Fat Possum.
Yuck - Rebirth (MP3)
Formed in London in 2009, Yuck combines the '90s indie aesthetic with elements of shoegaze, lo-fi, and punk to create a frenetic and rough take on the bands that dominated the critical scene during the band members' childhoods. After a string of singles throughout 2010, the band's debut emerged to critical acclaim in early 2011, and a year of touring the festival circuit followed. Earlier this year though, the band's roster changed drastically, with frontman Daniel Blumberg leaving the group and guitarist Max Bloom taking over vocal duties. The first track released from their first album as a trio, "Rebirth", finds the band energized and refining the sound they forged on their debut. Gauzy guitars and Bloom's melodic whine lead a towering flood of sounds that never wavers in its beautiful intensity. It's not a Joy Division/New Order-style change by any means, but when you've got a firm foothold on moving in one direction, why change paths?
Yuck hasn't announced any dates behind Glow & Behind yet, but when they do, those shows will be announced on their website and Facebook. Watch the then-quartet play "Shook Down" at SXSW 2011 for KEXP below.
