Save for Nirvana, there hasn't been a more influential band to emerge from Seattle than Pearl Jam. Formed by local veterans Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Jeff Ament in 1990, the band found singer Eddie Vedder through a mutual friend, and when drummer Matt Cameron joined in 1998, the band's current lineup was solidified. Equally as influenced by punk as they were by classic rock, Pearl Jam's anthemic songwriting helped them become one of the world's biggest bands at the beginning of the '90s, but the band disliked their newfound fame and responded by making a series of increasingly challenging records until morphing into one of America's biggest cult bands. Reminiscent of both their early, punk-tinged work and the New Wave immediacy of 2009's Backspacer, "Mind Your Manners" takes off straight out of the gate with buzzsaw guitars blaring. McCready and Gossard's furious interplay attacks without taking anything away from of Vedder's shouted growl. Exhilarating and topical without being preachy, "Mind Your Manners" shows not only that Pearl Jam still has plenty of gas left in the tank, but also that they're still willing to set things on fire on the way.
Pearl Jam is embarking on a tour behind Lightning Bolt later this year, and the Seattle date at Key Arena on December 6th is long sold out.
