Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today's song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is "Be All, Be Easy" by Woods, from the 2013 7" Be All, Be Easy/God's Children on Woodsist.
Woods - Be All, Be Easy (MP3)
Formed in Brooklyn in 2005, the psychedelic-tinged folk outfit Woods was originally little more than a project for songwriter Jeremy Earl’s home recordings, but the project grew, and by 2009, Woods had grown into a fully-fledged band. Expanded to include bassist Kevin Morby, multi-instrumentalist Jarvis Taveniere, and tape-sampler G. Lucas Crane, the band began to reach the full potential of what Earl’s earliest releases had hinted at. Now with their seventh album under their belt and on their own label, Woods are more realized and cohesive than Earl could have ever imagined. The A-side of their most recent standalone single, "Be All, Be Easy" is as gentle and breezy as its title suggests. Leaning slightly more towards a country-rock slant than Woods' previous work, the breezy tune is straightforward, but never too conventional, surrounding its laid-back rhythm with cleverly mixed vocals and light atmospherics. Equal parts pastoral and desert-baked, "Be All, Be Easy" is perhaps the clearest entry point into Woods' brand of experimental folk to date.
Woods will stop in Seattle at Barboza with the Fresh and Onlys on September 17th. Get info and tickets about that 21+ show here, and keep up with the band on their website and Facebook. Watch the band play "Be All, Be Easy" at this year's Pitchfork Music Festival below.
