Friday on My Mind: Moe 20 / Neumos 10 Anniversary Shows!

It’s time again for Friday on My Mind. Our weekly blog post where we look at videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News.

Two of Seattle's most beloved and important music venues are celebrating anniversaries this week. Moe's Mo'Roc'N Cafe opened in January of 1994. The building was originally a Salvation Army warehouse, and was bought by Graham Graham, Eric Shirley, and Jerry Everard. Most music venues were in Belltown at the time and Moe’s was one of the first venues to make its home on Capitol Hill. Throughout the venue's mere four year existence, they hosted many seminal bands before they were larger than life including Radiohead, Portishead, and The Flaming Lips. Moe's Mo'Roc'N Cafe hosted its last show in June 1998. It took about ten more years until Neumos Crystal Ball Reading Room rose out of the ashes of Moe's in February of 2004. The Moe 20 Neumos 10th Anniversary Shows will be a week of live music starting Thursday, January 9th, through Thursday, January 16th, to celebrate.Telekinesis, The Comettes, and Wild Ones played last night, but here is the rest of the line up:

The Posies, in their original lineup, will be playing Frosting on the Beater in its entirety tonight. Alcohol Funnycar, Rusty Willoughby, and Pop Sickle will be rounding out the bill. Sorry folks, but this show is SOLD OUT. Frosting on the Beater celebrated it's 20th Anniversary back in April. Telekinesis - Ghost and Creatures

My Goodness - Blackout Baby (LIVE on KEXP on April 9, 2011)

My Goodness will be opening for The Thermals on January 15th. My Goodness are no longer a duo since the addition of Cody Votolato on to accompany the searing guitar of Joel Schneider and propulsive drumming of Andy Lum. This February they will head out on a US tour with Augustines. Here is footage of their KEXP session from April when they performed "Blackout Baby" live on our airwaves:

The Thermals - Never Listen to Me

Portland's own The Thermals have been going strong since 2002, which isn't bad for a band that was originally formed as a side project. The Thermals have released albums on Sub Pop, Kill Rock Stars, and Saddle Creek. Catch them on the 15th along with My Goodness and Summer Cannibals. This is the only all ages show out of all the anniversary shows.

Rusty Willoughby - Help Is On the Way (Live on KEXP May 17, 2013)

Rusty is a Seattle music staple. Besides being the former drummer for The Fastbacks, he has also been a part of Flop, Pure Joy, Llama, as well as so many other projects. He'll be performing tonight along side The Poises, Pop Sickle, and Alcohol Funnycar.
