It's 37 degrees in Reykjavik, and KEXP is setting up at Kex Hostel for four days of incredible live music. Iceland Airwaves festival is just getting warmed up (it officially kicks off tomorrow), but things are already hot here at the hippest hostel in Iceland. We've brought along all the necessary equipment to broadcast live performances of some of the very best bands at the fest, and we couldn't be more excited to give you a front row seat.
Join us from 10am-6pm Seattle time Wednesday through Friday as Cheryl Waters and Kevin Cole host awesome acts from the volcanic wonderland of Iceland and beyond. This sold out festival has some 219 bands booked for official shows at venues big and small all across the city. But as Airwaves has grown and evolved since its inception in 1999, so too has the number of so-called "off venue shows". Crowds will eagerly pack in for free performances at record stores, restaurants, and bars, plus more unusual spots like an old folks home or a hot dog stand. For the next several days this city will be absolutely inundated with all sorts of great music in every sort of venue imaginable. But ask most locals, and they will tell you that Kex Hostel has one of the best line ups of the week for these exclusive, intimate shows. This is going to be THE place to be, and KEXP will bring you there live thanks to the magic of radio and online streaming.
This is our fourth year broadcasting from Airwaves, and we are so excited to be back. The equipment is all unloaded, tested, and set up, and we are working hard on overcoming our jet lag. Otherwise, everything is ready to go. We hope you'll join us in Iceland for a shot of Brennivín and five live performances per day. Tune in to 90.3 FM or stream audio and video (for the first time ever!) online as this dark, wintery city comes alive with music! Get more info here.
Every year, KEXP DJ John Richards produces the "Mom Show," a beautiful three-hour program of remembrance and reflection.
