Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Sun Went Black” by Springtime Carnivore from the 2014 album Springtime Carnivore on Autumn Tone Records.
Springtime Carnivore - Sun Went Black (MP3)
Behind the season and the dietary preference of Springtime Carnivore is Los Angeles-based artist Greta Morgan. With her quirkily-named one-woman project, Morgan infuses a '60s girl-group sound with a modern-day synth-sensibility.
It's a sound she's been working towards for a long time. Morgan began her musical career at the age of 15, previously a member of bands like Gold Motel and the Hush Sound. Most recently, she was the guitarist in La Sera, the similarly-retro-influenced project of Katy Goodman, formerly of Vivian Girls.
Now 26, Greta Morgan steps out into the spotlight with her own unique sound on her first full-length. Recorded with Richard Swift, known for his work with The Black Keys, The Shins, Foxygen, Springtime Carnivore is a psych-tinged indie-pop delight. Today's Song of the Day pick radiates with warmth, punctuated by gleeful handclap percussion.
Springtime Carnivore will be here in Seattle right before Spring, playing March 11th at Neumos with The Dodos. In the meanwhile, you can follow Springtime Carnivore on Twitter and Facebook.
