Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “The Who's Who of Who Cares” by Museum of Love from their 2014 self-titled album on DFA Records.
Museum of Love - The Who's Who of Who Cares (MP3)
Giving the Louvre a synthesizer and putting MoMA on beats won't get you Museum of Love. The collaboration between former LCD Soundsystem drummer Pat Mahoney (who knew he had such a suave voice?) and Dennis NcNany, a.k.a. Jee Day, began in 2011, with the longtime friends working on a few tracks and a remix. “Pat’s a sculptor, I’m a painter, we make music and museums are sacred spaces and love is an elusive thing.” With those simple words McNany describes Museum of Love, which is named after the Daniel Johnston song. Three years after the spark of this sizzling musical chemistry we finally have a full length to bop to. The album’s first single, “The Who’s Who of Who Cares,” is a fresh take on 80s new wave electro pop with layered beats that scratch, clap, hiss, and snap. Bring in some horns with the slow build of Mahoney’s debonair vocals and the song turns into a howling blowout. The track's title earns the duo extra points for snarky coolness.
Museum of Love stopped by KEXP on their way through Seattle earlier this month, so be on the lookout for videos from that set. You can also stay up to date with the band on their Facebook page, website, and Twitter. For now, watch some literal face melting in the music video for “The Who’s Who of Who Cares” below, which features Pat sculpting and melting what looks like Dennis's face in a salute to their art school pasts:
