Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. This week, we are featuring Christmas-themed songs selected by Brian Foss.
Brian Foss started hosting KEXP's Sonic Reducer on Saturday nights in 2004. That first year, Christmas fell on a Saturday, and since his friend Pete (former owner of the punk record store Singles Going Steady) owned a decent Xmas punk collection, he joined Brian on air and started a tradition of doing a yearly punk rock Christmas show. In 2007, Pete moved out of Seattle and Brian felt obligated to keep the tradition going and began his own dumb collection of holiday hardcore tunes. All non-traditional songs - no White Christmas's, no Jingle Bells. Only originals. Now it's a sickness and he can't stop.
Brian's pick for today is "Letter to Santa" by Girl Trouble from the 2013 Girl Trouble & The Dignataries Christmas Split 7" on Unsmashable.
Girl Trouble - Letter to Santa (MP3)
Says Brian...
Formed in 1983 and still very active today, this Tacoma foursome continue to lay down a garage rock party with every show they play. From a tradition of releasing Christmas songs (there was the holiday split 7" with the Kings Of Rock in 1989 and the track "Sigue Sigue X-Mas" in 2000), Girl Trouble put this snotty track on a 2013 split 7" with The Dignitaries. This year, Girl Trouble celebrated 30 years as a band, and they're still going strong. In fact, they just performed a KEXP-sponsored show last week with legendary alt-rock bands X and The Blasters. You can find out more about Girl Trouble on their website and Facebook page, and by watching Strictly Sacred, the soon-to-be-released-on-DVD documentary on the band, which we reviewed as part of the Seattle Intentional Film Festival last year.
