It’s time again for Friday on My Mind. Our weekly blog post where we look at videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News.
If you haven’t already heard, KEXP needs a new home. We haven’t yet moved from our little building on Dexter & Denny, but we will need to vacate in exactly a year from this week. The next chapter of KEXP will set up camp at the Northwest Rooms over at the Seattle Center which isn’t too far from where we are now. KEXP has always been proud to support artists and now we’ll be able to do so in an even greater capacity than ever before. Touring musicians that are far from home will be able to chill out at the new KEXP location. When they stop through for their in studio performances, we’ll now be able to provide them with the ability take a break from their ongoing touring and do some laundry, shower, or just relax in the greenroom space we plan to provide within our new space. Nothing against the Pink Elephant Car Wash or Willamette Dental Office, but we’ll have kick ass neighbors that will include The Vera Project, McCaw Hall, and ACT theater to name a few. We’ll be a part of an arts haven. And not to mention, we’re upping our Seattle anty now that we’ll be amongst the likes of Key Arena and The Space Needle. Next week we’ll be asking for all of your help to make KEXP’s new home possible, but you don’t have to wait until Monday to make a gift. You can go here now and help us be able to continue to bring you music curated by human DJs as supported by all of you, the listeners, in a new space. And now to get geared up for our new home, here are a few songs that talk about just that...The Beatles - Two of Us
One of the many cool plans for our new home is a gathering area where everyone and anyone can get coffee, shop for records, all while watching KEXP DJs spinning music. From 1969, this home song is from the one and only Beatles. Going back to the Let It Be album for this one, it’s been said that Paul McCartney wrote these lyrics for Linda McCartney before they were married. KEXP is indeed on our way home.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Home (Big Easy Express Version)
Within KEXP’s new home, the in studio performance space will be four times the size of our live room here at Dexter & Denny. We’ll now have the space for 75 people to view live sessions at any time. One of the many bands who have come through the KEXP studios is Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. From their 2010 debut Up From Below, our next song choice is “Home” by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. Here they are performing “Home” live back in Spring 2011 while being filmed for the documentary Big Easy Express. This was a featured scene within that documentary, which followed a tour which besides Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, included Old Crow Medicine Show and Mumford & Sons. The filmed followed the bands as they travelled across the US on a train in which they have all to themselves.

Simon and Garfunkel - Homeward Bound (Live at Central Park)
From now until December 31st, you’ll also get a chance to score our special new home tee shirt or head over to hoodie town with a new home hoodie. And to round out our home song choices, we can’t forget the 1966 classic, “Homeward Bound” by Simon & Garfunkel. This was the second major hit for the duo and was recorded with many of the same musicians who played on Bob Dylan’s Highway 61. Here is their performance of “Homeward Bound” during their reunion benefit concert in Central Park back during September 1981.
