Some bands jump into their opening song and some bands literally jump into their opening song. After completing their own soundcheck at Sasquatch, Seattle band Kithkin quietly got into position on the sides of the stage and literally leaped – with Kelton Sears nearly pulling off the best scissor kick of the weekend – into "Fallen Giants". After that, it was one frenetic performance after another, drawing a sizeable crowd to the small Narwhal stage. While many a band has used the percussion-as-instrumental-filler approach to live shows, Kithkin's emphatic and dynamic use of percussion makes their melodic instruments seem secondary. When the band spends a fair amount of the set in the audience and continues to play on beat, it's an undeniably impressive feat, but when that band is a local phenomenon who just released their album days ago, it's downright extraordinary. The band's Cascadian flag flew high Friday afternoon, and unless some evil forest spirits attempt to cease the band's rituals, Kithkin will probably continue to conquer the Pacific Northwest in months to come.
