KEXP Suggests: Other Stuff at Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival

Yeah, yeah, sure — The Replacements, Wu-Tang, Elvis Costello... Everyone knows how amazing this year's musical line-up is for the 2014 Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival, but, Bumbershoot has always been more than just the tunes. Let's take a closer look at some of the art exhibits, lectures, and comedy shows you can check out in-between the great bands.

Jini Dellaccio: January 31, 1917 – July 3, 2014, Fountain PavilionAll weekend long, you can check out a special tribute show, curated by Chuck Pennington and Larry Reid, celebrating the life, career and art of local photographer Jini Dellaccio, an American photographer best known for her 1960s images of Northwest rock and roll acts including The Sonics, The Wailers, Merrilee Rush, The Daily Flash and many others.

1:00 PM // Face the Music, 1 Reel Film FestivalTake a break with a short film collection, featuring stories of musicians and music. Highlights include: The Boombox Project is a vibrant look at an old-school icon that figured prominently in the hip-hop, rock & roll, and punk movements of the 1970s and 80s. Flower Shop tells the story of prolific drummer Phil Young, who puts his music career on hold to fight for the legacy of his family's third generation business. And in Flor de Toloache, a group of women daringly challenge gender social norms as an all-female mariachi band.

3:30 PM // Stephin Merritt in Conversation, Words & Ideas StageBrangien Davis of Seattle Magazine welcomes Magnetic Fields frontman Stephin Merritt, who will discuss his first book 101 Two-Letter Words — an instructional book about all the smallest words admissible in the Scrabble dictionary.

5:30 PM // Black Weirdo, Words & Ideas StageSub Pop duo THEESatisfaction started Black Weirdo as a blog — a tribute to their favorite musicians, visual artists, photographers, dancers, and writers of the African diaspora. KEXP DJ Larry Mizell Jr. will lead a discussion with JusMoni, KEXP DJ Riz Rollins, Storme Webber, Erik Blood, DJ Mursi Layne, and Stas and Cat of THEESatisfaction about what it’s like to be Black, Queer, and in Seattle.

7:00 PM // Smrt Talk With The Writers of The Simpsons, Words & Ideas StageHead to the theater for a panel discussion with the writers of The Simpsons; this year, the show begins its record-breaking 26th season. Stewart Burns, Kevin Curran, Rob Lazebnik, Carolyn Omine, Michael Price, and Jeff Westbrook will discuss their process, their favorite moments and answer fan questions.

2:00 PM // The Memphis Sound, 1 Reel Film FestivalEscape from the heat at 2:00 PM for a curated collection of films featuring an overview of recent Mid-South flavor, from Electraphonic to Aristocrunk. Included in this reel of short films is the clip Valerie June: Workin’ Woman Blues, a portrait of the Tennessee singer-songwriter; The Bo-Keys: Making of The Electraphonic Singles Series, featuring producer Scott Bomar with the current line-up of the Bo-Keys and their most recent project from his Electraphonic Recording studio; and Lord T & Eloise: Wu Hui, a short film where Lord T & Eloise take a trip to China to spread the gospel of crunk.
