Last weekend saw the return of Reykjavik Calling, the annual showcase featuring artists from sister cities Reykjavik and Seattle. Each year, KEXP curates the bill, selecting likeminded artists whose complementary styles might lead to fruitful collaboration. This year, we made our choices with a mind toward Iceland's 2015 centennial of women's right to vote in their country, matching the dark emotive rock of Mammút with Seattle's Midday Veil, and the cosmic sounds of Airplane & Spaceship (a.k.a. DJ flugvél & geimskip) with the space-vocal stylings of SassyBlack (a.k.a. Cat of THEESatisfaction). Seattle songwriter Briana Marela, who recorded her 2015 album, All Around Us, in Iceland with Sigur Rós producer Alex Somers, opened the night.
