El Sonido: Novalima, Mr. Pauer, Gepe y Los Alan Anaya

This week in El Sonido we’ll be once again bouncing around the globe to bring you a bunch of fresh new sounds in the world of modern Latin music.

To kick things off it's the Afro-Peruvian funk and subtle electronics of Lima, Peru's Novalima. This is their third live appearance on KEXP, and I couldn't be happier to have them back to perform songs off of their latest full-length record, Planetario. The album was mostly recorded while they were on tour and the resulting collaborations add a bit of Cuban, Colombian and other flavors to their uplifting dance music.

On to Miami with Mr. Pauer. I'm a big fan of his self-coined electrópico style, and he really brings it with his new, second album, Orange. There's more live instrumentation and a stellar cast of guest appearances that offer up a wide variety of tropical fusions that can ignite the dancefloor, get you to kick back or make you bob your head somewhere in the middle. Chilean star Gepe dropped his latest LP, Estilo Libre, this fall and it's another nice blend of pop, Andean folk and his subtle, underlying penchant for reggaeton. "Hambre" is the first single and pretty much sums it up for me. The guest appearance by Peruvian child star Wendy Sulca, who's now 19 and returning to the public eye, is odd and awesome. Go ahead and search the web for her massively-popular and squeaky childhood tunes about breastfeeding, and also beer. Anyway, the video is extravagantly dark and humorous. Provecho.
