Song of the Day: Royal Headache - Carolina

Sydney’s Royal Headache tames the roar of garage fuzz with a hint of soul, creating a delightfully unique sound that goes down smooth but still packs a punch. The group overcame rumors to have been finished to release their excellent sophomore album, High, which finds the band continuing their output of churning, guitar driven music that recalls the younger days of rock and punk and features lead vocalist Shogun's soulfully raspy voice. Album ballad "Carolina" is a great introduction to the album, as it may be the best proof that the genre of soul-punk not only exists but can thrive. On it, rolling guitar chords ride a wave of fuzz and Shogun delivers a rousing performance, crooning in a fashion that's both raw and smooth, emotional and careless. It's a song that's dipped in nostalgia and fittingly pays homage to their influences ("sweet caroline" is heard at the song's end), while refusing to be defined by them.
