Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Julia” by Fast Romantics from the 2015 self-released single.
Fast Romantics - Julia (MP3)
You'll be hard pressed to find a more apt band name than Fast Romantics, especially when listening to today's featured song. The Toronto-based, Calgary-bred five-piece punch up a new breed of New Romanticism with plenty of power pop hooks with their latest single, "Julia". On it, singer/songwriter Matthew Angus croons, lovelorn, to his heart's desire with Jarvis Cocker-esque swagger bolstered by the band's exalting choruses, buzzing guitar licks, chiming keys and pulsing beat.
Fast Romantics are not currently on the road, as they now working on their forthcoming third album, which is sure to contain more "super upbeat and poppy" tunes as well as some "that are dark and vibe-y and really rhythmic". You can look forward to more new music by following the band on Facebook and checking out their website. For now, watch the official video (featuring Fred Astaire!) for today's Song of the Day:
