Back in 2009, Captain Fufanu was the first act I saw on my very first trip to Iceland Airwaves. The then-duo of vocalist Kaktus Einarsson and programmer/guitarist Gulli Einarsson played a weird kind of techno to a scattered and mostly disinterested group of "important people" in the press lounge. As quirky as they were, with Kaktus, channeling his father, Einar Örn of The Sugarcubes and Ghostdigital, with exaggerated dance moves and occasional trumpet playing, Captain Fufanu were undeniably memorable. A few years later, they've transformed quite dramatically, both shortening their name and adding more members. Now, as a post-rocking five-piece, Fufanu unite a dark, droning sound with evocative lyrics on their debut EP, Adjust to the Light, which really asks you to do the opposite. Songs buzz and shred, rather than bleep and bloop, and sound a million times more dangerous and alluring, and today's featured song, "We Will Last", is like a testament to all those press folks who were wandering around looking for free drinks. Now, they'll be looking much more intently at this up-and-coming band.
Fufanu will close out KEXP's first day of broadcast from Kex Hostel during Iceland Airwaves.
