Song of the Day: East of My Youth - Only Lover

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. This week, we are featuring songs by artists performing KEXP's broadcast at Kex Hostel in Reykjavik during Iceland Airwaves. Today’s featured song is “Only Lover” by East of My Youth, a 2015 self-released single.

Formed only last year, East of My Youth three friends who grew up in the same Reykjavik neighborhood, went to the same school, but "didn't really hang out". After Thelma Marín Jónsdóttir and Herdís Stefánsdóttir met up in art school in Berlin, they found they had the same dreams to "form a band and sing and dance around the world". Back in Iceland, with Guðni Einarsson, they've formed the electro-pop trio East of My Youth, debuting with the shimmering gem "Lemonstars" and following, more recently, with the more darkly alluring "Only Lover", combining elements of dream pop, chillwave, trip hop, and EDM into an undeniable groove.

So far, only the two songs are available, but this past summer, East of My Youth successfully raised the required moneys through Karolina Fund to record, mix and master their full-length debut, which should be released this year.

East of My Youth opens KEXP's first day of broadcast from Kex Hostel during Iceland Airwaves. At 6:00AM Pacific Time on Wednesday, November 4th, you can listen to them live at 90.3 FM in Seattle and worldwide at kexp.org, where you can also watch live streaming video of all performances during KEXP's broadcast.
