Review Revue: Siouxsie and the Banshees - Hyaena

The DJ comments on this LP call us back to a dark time when not every album was available everywhere in the world instantly upon its release. Many well-loved bands could only be heard by spending way too much money on physical objects that had been transported in small batches from another country to ours (we called them "imports"). Hyaena was Siouxsie and the Banshees' sixth studio album, but the first to be released on a major domestic label. Cue the excitement and, these being college DJs, the disappointment. (And the unnecessary personal attacks, just for extra fun.) Even more exciting, The Cure's Robert Smith was now in the band as a permanent member! (Just kidding.)

It seems I have once again, completely accidentally, come up with a somewhat timely post: Yesterday was Siouxsie Sioux's 58th birthday. Happy birthday, Siouxsie! Rumor (i.e. Wikipedia) has it we may receive a follow-up to Mantaray, her only solo album, this year too. Here's hoping!

"FINALLY, a real U.S. Domestic from Siouxsie & the B's, now signed to the mighty Geffen. Includes 'Dear Prudence,' as well as 'Swimming Horses.' Robert 'Cure' Smith on guitar & keyboards, as a permanent Banshee."

"Well an almost personal member?"

"I still like the 'Prudence' cover & this cover is pretty neat, too..."

"A sign of IQ from J.C. - wow!"

"Hey, asshole, keep your opinions out of here - comment on the records and have the guts to sign your name."

"Neil, please don't call me an asshole. I merely forgot to 'have the guts.' So sorry. P.S. Aren't these stickers for our opinions or have I been wrong all this time? A little on edge today, aren't we Neil?"

"Hey, sorry Marsh."

"More trendy poptones for all you trendsetters & hepcats."

Too bad it's on Geffen. Too bad McGeoch is gone."

"Yup you are very right."

"'Take Me Back' - nice, melodic."

"Why is it too bad it's on Geffen? With a major label she may get the fame she deserves!"

"Much better production from Polydor."

Review Revue: R.E.M. - Fables of the Reconstruction

I know, I know, didn't I just post an R.E.M. album a month or so ago? I guess I kinda did. But I have my reasons! First of all, Fables of the Reconstruction was released 30 years ago next week (and checked into KCMU 30 years ago tomorrow, as you can tell by the sticker on the bottom). Happy birthda…

Review Revue: Queen Latifah - All Hail the Queen

If you had told the DJs at KCMU 25-plus years ago, as they listened to the debut album by the New Jersey rapper known as Queen Latifah, that in 2015 her name would the second thing suggested by Google when you type in "Queen" (just under "Queen Elizabeth"), they would have said "what's Google?" But…
