Song of the Day: MOURN - Gertrudis, Get Through This!

Boasting a direct, no-bullshit, no-pretension brand of rock with a magnetically caustic edge, Mourn's unbridled snarl of a style rallies around the band members' youthful fearlessness. Currently aged 16-19, the members of Mourn – vocalist/guitarist Jazz Rodríguez Bueno, guitarist/vocalist Carla Pérez Vas, drummer Antonio Postius Echeverría, and bassist Leia Rodríguez Bueno – first decided to make punk rock after hearing PJ Harvey in their teens and began to play music together not long after. Although they were a staple in the Barcelona scene for some time prior, the band picked up a wave of attention when Captured Tracks released their self titled debut in late 2014, and in 2015, they began touring outside of Spain. Released on a 7" from earlier this year, "Gertrudis, Get Through This!" picks up where Mourn left off, stacking scratchy-yet-hook-laden guitars on over Bueno's percussive vocals and crystallizing everything that Mourn have going for them: it's urgent, furious, and, most of all, it sounds progressively better as the listener's speakers get louder. In a wave of comparisons to PJ Harvey, it was rarely mentioned that the Catalonian quartet's closest connection to Harvey was not Bueno's snarl or guitar style, but that they arrived fully-formed in both sound and ambition, and "Gertrudis, Get Through This!" cements that the group are well on their way to whatever musical ground they'll inevitably conquer next.
