On the Seattle quartet's June release, Building Mountains, Ghost Pains continues to champion their excellent brand of punk influenced rock. They balance the spirit of punk, the heaviness of rock and the infectious nature of pop flawlessly. It's music you can take out for a wild night, rebel against society with and then take home to meet your parents. If you need a better example than that ambiguous metaphor, look no further then "Arboretum." The track finds a winding guitar riff and driving bass line supporting rising vocals which build into squealing guitars. But just as it seems inevitable that the song will break out in furious punk fashion, a lofty chorus counters the chaos. It is a perfect monument to the band's ability to play hard and fast but also give their catchy songwriting room to breath, and surely a sign of more exciting things to come from the talented Seattle group.
