Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is "Getaway" by Jaill from the 2015 album Brain Cream on Burger Records.
Jaill - Getaway (MP3)
You might call Milwaukee band Jaill repeat offenders, at least when it comes to record labels. Six years ago, the group put out their debut, There’s No Sky (Oh My My), for a limited release on Burger Records, and then, following two additional releases on Seattle's own Sub Pop records - That's How We Burn and Traps - they've returned to the garage pop lovin' Fullerton label. In that time, the group has been completely revamped, leaving bandleader Vinnie Kircher as the only original member. Kircher, though, knows a good thing when he hears it, and across all four albums, Jaill has locked tight on a punchy surf-infused jangle pop sound that's perfect for escaping outdoors. And speaking of that, today's song of the day, "Getaway", is an uplifting release, featuring a bouncy rhythm in direct contrast with its dark lyrics (another facet of the band's long running M.O.). "I help my loved ones getaway" may be the song's oft-repeated line, but you'll want to stick around for Jaill.
The band played a handful of shows on the East Coast earlier this month, but don't have anything yet scheduled for the near future. Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for Jaill to come to your city. Until then, keep up with them on their website and Facebook page, and watch their picturesque new video for today's featured song:
