Photo Gallery: Concerts at the Mural with Justin Chan, Sassy Black, Pillar Point & The Coup 8/21

For the third Friday evening in our free Concerts at the Mural series, on Donor Appreciation Night, clear sunny skies and sweet tunes beckoned fans to fill the Seattle Center lawn. KEXP truly is a community effort, and Friday night showed what the community is all about. Justin Chan won a chance to play for the crowd thanks to the Seattle-wide Pianos In The Park, SassyBlack celebrated her birthday with the crowd (which included her parents and family), and an arsenal of different KEXP donor t-shirts could be spotted around the Seattle Center. Add killer performances by The Coup and Pillar Point, and it was hard to imagine a better way to celebrate the donor's that make KEXP possible.

Pianos In the Parks is "a public-private partnership that uses the power of art and music to get us out to discover parks, connect with people, and have fun." In promotion of the program, Pianos In The Park challenged people to record and upload video of themselves playing one of the park pianos, with the video capturing the most votes winning a chance to perform at Concerts at the Mural. 37 year-old and software consultant Justin Chan won the 2015 Piano at the Parks contest with his "Stu's Blue's" video, featuring a jazzy improvisation on two different pianos. He brought his winning video to life to start things off on Fridays Concert at the Mural.

Justin Chan:

SassyBlack is one third of THEESatisfaction, the Seattle group that's genre busting blend of music has made them a standout act on Sub Pop. She brought her signature flow and played some lesser known solo material that held up well to her work in THEESatisfaction. She showered the crowd with chill vibes, offering the perfect soundtrack to sit back in the grass and enjoy a sunny Friday afternoon.

SassyBlack:

Seattle duo Pillar Point kept things going with their dark spin of synthpop. Pulsing beats and haunting choruses swirled with the kick of live drums to get heads nodding. The group just finished touring with of Montreal, a fact that was certainly reflected in their excellent live performance.

Pillar Point:

The Coup took the Seattle Center by storm, getting a good part of the crowd up and dancing for the duration of their set. The 7-piece blasted the crowd with their unique style of funky, rock driven hip-hop, drenched in social consciousness. Lead man Boots Riley gave an electric performance, and everyone in the group blew the crowds mind with a solo at some point in the night.
