Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Dream Lover” by Destroyer from the 2015 album Poison Season out August 28th on Merge Records.
Destroyer - Dream Lover (MP3)
When not performing with The New Pornographers, Vancouver-based musician Dan Bejar records under the name Destroyer. On August 28th, he returns with his tenth full-length, Poison Season, which also marks his first solo album since 2011's critically-acclaimed Kaputt.
Kaputt surprised everyone with its smooth, retro sound, and as you can hear on today's Song of the Day, he's not done with the saxophones quite yet! A press release says his current sound "takes sonic cues from a distinctly British (usually Scottish, to be precise) strain of sophisti-pop: you might hear traces of Aztec Camera, Prefab Sprout, Orange Juice, or The Blow Monkeys. These songs merge a casual literary brilliance with intense melodic verve, nimble arrangements, and a certain blue-eyed-soul sadness."
Destroyer heads out on a nationwide tour this fall, including an all ages show on Friday, October 16th at the Neptune Theatre. Keep tabs on Bejar via the official Facebook page (though not run by Dan himself) or via his label. Hear more from his forthcoming full-length with the video for the track "Girl in a Swing" below:
