Song of the Day: Communions - Forget It's a Dream

Although they're part of the same Copenhagen scene that spawned the caustic punk of Iceage and Lower, Communions' silvery, often soaring ebullience is a far cry from those bands' confrontational fire. Across a pair of EPs and a 7", brothers Martin and Mads Rehof, Jacob van Deurs Formann, and Frederik Lind Köppen, Communions have become one of the more prominent bands in the aforementioned Mayhem scene and Copenhagen as a whole through their immediate, melodic, atmosphere-heavy songwriting. While the band had been Copenhagen favorites for some time at that point, 2014's "So Long Sun/Love Stands Still" 7" proved to be Communions' first release to capture the attention of European tastemakers, with momentum only building more upon the arrival of this summer's self-titled EP, which preceded the band's appearance at the major European festival Roskilde Festival in June. True to its namesake, "Forget It's a Dream" is filled with gauzy tones, albeit ones that mask the band's underlying strengths, namely their sense of rhythm and Martin Rehof's incisive vocal performance. The way the singer twists his voice around his wide-eyed words underscores the song's romantic sentiment in a way that's only paralled by his bandmates' dizzy pace. What stands out most about "Forget It's a Dream", however, is the breathless conviction the band has as they dive into what's ultimately a brilliant punk love song, never once flinching in their starry-eyed dive into their own fantasy.
