Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unrealeased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “The Holy Ghost” by decker. from the 2016 self-released album Snake River Blues.
decker. – The Holy Ghost (MP3)While here in the Northwest the days are getting significantly gloomier and more dark with each passing day, down in Arizona the sun is still shining and will continue to for the majority of the year. This obviously creates a different sort of mindset and sound for many musicians living in America's desert areas. "Desert rock" may not technically be a legitimate genre but you know it when you hear it. It's less twangy than southern rock but more bluesy than alternative rock. There's also a twinge of psychedelia mixed in there because being in the desert can make a person crazy. This description also happens to fit perfectly in describing decker., the project by songwriter Brandon Decker, who just sounds like Arizona,
After touring the U.S. three times over, decker. returned to his red rocks home of Sedona, AZ, and wrote his sixth record in seven years, Snake River Blues, which dropped on September 23rd. The lead single "The Holy Ghost" starts things out on a high note. The raucous, uptempo track gives Jack White a run for his money with it's fevered guitar licks, crashing drums, and bluesy storytelling. It's a foot-to-the-pedal, full speed ahead kind of track and it's exhilarating.
decker. is currently playing shows in Arizona and can be kept up with on Facebook and Twitter. Check out the trippy video for "The Holy Ghost" below.
