Another week, another band the Internet knows almost nothing about. If the KCMU DJs circa 1987 are to be believed, Leatherface Gets Religion is not the first release by this mysterious band. Discogs seems to back that up, reporting that most of these tracks come from a pair of 12"s, 1984's 'Gator Breath Riot! (I appreciate the use of an apostrophe with "'Gator") and 1986's Legendary Bigfoot. So Kill Ugly Pop definitely existed before the Japanese band Lip Cream released their album Kill Ugly Pop, but did Lip Cream know about them, or was this just some kind of punk rock '80s zeitgeist situation? We may never know. And we may never know much more about KUP (unless Reverend U'Tang finds this post and decides to comment), but since it's 2016, at least we can hear a couple of their songs on Youtube.
"The Rev U'Tang and his flock in a 'greatest hits' of sorts (most of this - 1.1-2.2 - has already been released). Jangly, rockin. Try the Cramps for comparison, 'cept that's not quite it. I liked 1.3 and 2.1.""A lot of this rocks well. I liked 'Fund a Mental.'"
"This is a really strong record which will probably grow with you. This may even find its way up to H."
"Finally! Thank you! Got this on tape - cool."
"This sounds pretty good."
"Thanks Mark for your profound, insightful comments."
"Just for you, my precious. Actually, I don't know if I like this. I don't care."
In the Nursery must be one of the longest running and most prolific projects I've covered in this series, having released albums almost annually since 1983 (they've slowed down a bit in recent years, with only six full-length releases since 2005).
I've covered a lot of obscure bands in the (gulp) 9 years I've been doing this series, but The Invisible really takes the cake. Interestingly, their album Dystopia seems to be available on all the usual internet music services, but the only smidge of information I can find on them is a discogs list…
