Song of the Day: Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Let Me Get There (feat. Kurt Vile)

Kurt Vile] (MP3)It's almost impossible to mention Hope Sandoval in any context without having her name be synonymous with a manically beautiful mind and legendary musician that's heavily influenced the moody and ethereal rock genre. Having sang for the magically hazy Mazzy Star throughout the 90s and beyond, carried her gravely folkier solo project with The Warm Inventions throughout the ought years, and lent her limitless bag of talents to seminal acts like Massive Attack and The Jesus and Mary Chain, it's easy to see why Hope Sandoval is a powerhouse. Plus, she's just a boss. She's very fluid and selective. Until 2013, Mazzy Star hadn't released an album in seventeen years. Similarly, until this year, Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions hadn't dropped one of their hair-raisingly stunning and delicate albums since 2009. To be that many years removed from a certain band and pick things up as if it was yesterday is demonstration of indelible musicianship.

So After seven years, Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions have released their third full-length, Until the Hunter, and is an climactic follow-up to Through The Devil Softly. Like Mazzy Star's 2013 release Seasons of Your Day, Until the Hunter was recorded with Colm Ó Cíosóig, drummer and founding member of My Bloody Valentine. It appears that Sandoval called on some bigwig balladeers to appear on Hunter. Among others there is: Mariee Sioux, Jim Putnam of Radar Brothers, street musician Michael Masley, and, of course, Kurt Vile. "Let Me Get There" is the second single off Hunter that clocks in just shy of seven and a half minutes, but could enjoyably go for another seven minutes. It's so easy to get lost in the tranquilizing call-and-response duet between Hope and Kurt, the hypnotic Wilco-reminiscent Americana guitar work, muted keys twinkling in the background, and smooth psychedelic textures. It's a song that you could just pick a spot in the starry night sky and stare it for hours as the song plays on loop.
