Seattle band Night Beats have been described as many things – garage rock, experimental R&B, psychedelic fuzz, Americana – but foremost they are a band that thrives on surprising their audience by delivering the unexpected. Who Sold My Generation, their recently released third studio album, exudes authenticity, with groovy guitar riffs, hauntingly dreamy vocals, and a dominant political edge that sets this album apart. On Who Sold My Generation, Danny Lee Blackwell, James Traeger, and Jakob Bowden serve up much more than pure musical entertainment–they set out to raise critical questions about the corrosion of our society within popular culture. Questions like "What the f*ck happened? Is this how we treat each other now? And what are we going to do about it?" By focusing on issues they're passionate about, and by using their music as a platform, the band urges fans to counter complacency. They inspire us to wake up and listen; wake up and ask questions.
In the studio, producer Nic Jodoin captured Night Beats' naturally gritty sound with live recordings on a tape machine and only minimal post-production work. The resulting vibe lends itself expertly to the band's raw energy and frenetic mission to create a truly incomparable album. The driving beat of "Sunday Mourning" is rough-edged and dark, with rattlesnake percussion and an addictive pulse. Its heavy psych groove invokes a feeling of being forced back to reality from a lingering, distorted, dream-like state as the song disappears into the sunset on a wave of southern rock infused guitar riffs.
Night Beats are currently on tour, with a Seattle homecoming show scheduled for April 9 at Neumos. They'll also perform live in the KEXP studio on Monday, April 11, at 12PM.
