Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “You Now” by Nite Jewel from her 2016 album, Liquid Cool, on Gloriette Records.
Nite Jewel - You Now (MP3)
Ramona Gonzalez has been working under the moniker Nite Jewel since 2009 and has thus been a pioneer of the modern synth pop sound that exploded in 2012 with Grimes and the Johnny Jewel-led Drive soundtrack. She's been loyal to this genre and continues it masterfully with "You Now" off her recently released third LP, Liquid Cool, which is a perfect description of her music. With a simple, solid synth bass line, heavy claps, and affecting vocals, "You Now" is the epitome of liquid cool.
Nite Jewel is currently wrapping up a short summer US tour before jetting off to the UK. Unfortunately, there were no Northwest dates on her itinerary, but hopefully a Seattle date will appear in the future (a show with local favorites Youryoungbody would be pretty perfect)! In the meantime, check out Nite Jewel's website and Facebook page for updates and watch her latest video, for the single "Boo Hoo", also off Liquid Cool.
