Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “OB1” by Jagwar Ma from their upcoming album, Every Now & Then, due this fall on Mom + Pop Music.
Jagwar Ma – OB1 (MP3)
Jagwar Ma’s 2013 album, Howlin’ was a huge success, heavily praised by Pitchfork and Vice, as well our very own KEXP DJs. Part of the recent surge of incredible Australian psych-rock, Jagwar Ma have played sold out shows all over the world, touring with the likes of Tame Impala and The XX. They’ve announced a second album at last, Every Now & Then, out on Mom & Pop Records this fall. The first single, "OB1", features Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa on drums. The energizing track is modern but familiar at the same time, blending styles of acid house, techno, funk and other dance styles while retaining just a trace of their earlier Madchester-influenced sound. Heady and hearty, "OB1" is a harbinger of good things to come.
Jagwar Ma commenced an international tour in July, just after announcing the new album. Luckily, there are plenty of US tour dates, including a stop in Seattle really soon for Bumbershoot, where they’ll play on September 3rd. In the meantime, check out the video for "OB1" below, and keep track of the band through their website and Facebook page.
