Paris-based French-Cuban sister duo Ibeyi share their sophomore LP. KEXP Music Director Don Yates calls the latest from Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Diaz "another stunning, beautifully crafted blend of electro-pop, soul, hip-hop and traditional Cuban percussion, combining a spacious, beat-driven sound with their celestial harmonies and empowering lyrics." Local guys Versing debut with "an impressive set of '90s-influenced rock reminiscent at times of Pavement, and Modest Mouse, combining fuzzy, twisting guitar lines, shape-shifting rhythms and potent song hooks." (Read more about the album in this week's edition of Throwaway Style, our local music column.)
On their second album, UK group Wolf Alice unleash "an even more expansive and assured set ranging from shoegazerish psych-rock and ferocious garage-punk to driving synth-pop and atmospheric folk." Detroit band Protomartyr deliver "a potent set of ominous post-punk with shape-shifting songs featuring jagged guitar lines, hypnotic rhythms and dread-filled, often-politically charged lyrics for these dark times." Brookln band Honey -- featuring former members of Psychic Ills and Amen Dunes -- share "a fierce blend of driving, blues-tinged psych-rock and high-energy garage-punk" on their second LP. And Jessica Lea Mayfield returns with "an emotionally powerful set with a diverse sound ranging from heavy, grunge-tinged rock to driving dream-pop and haunting folk framing her deadpan drawl and frank lyrics detailing an abusive relationship."
