Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is "Keep the Voices Distant" by Monster Movie, the title track off their forthcoming album, Keep the Voices Distant, due March 31 Graveface Records.
Monster Movie - Keep the Voices Distant (MP3)Monster Movie is the project that breathes in krauty ambiance and exhales guitar fuzzed post rock. The musical familiarity Christian Savill and Sean Hewson have created with each other through their work in Monster Movie and a close touring, and performing, relationship with Slowdive shines. Slowdive’s relatively recent reunion was what motivated Hewson and Savill’s own project to do the same, and this Friday they present their first album in seven years. As has been the case with hundreds of bands prior, the chops and tightness touring develops promises Keep the Voices Distant to be Movie’s strongest release yet.
Today's featured song is the album's title track, and on it we hear the band returning with more of an edge than their prior release. Though recorded professionally in Detroit's White House Recording Studios, with Martin Nichols, the song still buzzes with post-punk basement abandon and is awash with an amazon rainfall's worth of reverberating guitar, keyboard and percussion sound. Even after the long delay, it’s evident that Monster Movie still know what they want.
Keep the Voices Distant hits record stores this Friday. As of now, the band's only live show listed is a UK date with Is Bliss, but after the album's release, a U.S. seems likely. Look for updates and music on Monster Movie’s Facebook page. After copping that, check out the album's first single, "Shouldn't Stray from the Shadows":
