KEXP
DJ Troy Nelson, Butch Vig, and producer Jackson Long

Last year, the documentary The Smart Studios Story premiered, a tribute to the now-legendary recording studio, founded by also now-legendary producer/musician Butch Vig and Steve Marker. Opened in 1983 when the two were college students at the University of Wisconsin, and closed in 2010 after a decline in usage, the studio helped bring to life some of your favorite songs from Nirvana (who recorded the Nevermind demos at Smart), L7, Garbage, and Smashing Pumpkins, just to name a very few.

Back in December 2016, KEXP was honored to welcome Vig and filmmaker/musician Wendy Schneider to the airwaves for a chat with DJ Troy Nelson. Today, Tuesday, March 7th, The Smart Studios Story is being released to iTunes, and below, for the first time ever, you can listen to Troy's interview with Butch, produced by KEXP's Jackson Long, in its entirety.
