In early February, I attended MENT Ljubljana, a three-day festival of new and emerging bands and artists from Europe and beyond—mostly Central and Eastern Europe. There’s a conference component to the festival too, and I was invited to share the KEXP story to delegates from the music industry in Europe gathered to discuss creativity, distribution, licensing, and the issues facing the music industry. KEXP is seen as a beacon of hope for independent artists and music lovers all over the world, and it was a great opportunity to discover new bands and to meet, connect, and engage with music makers from Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, Macedonia, the Czech Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, Slovakia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Latvia, Poland, Germany, Scotland, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Russia and more. The festival is lovingly curated, and I experienced a ton of excellent bands for the first time. I’m excited to share the highlights on the Afternoon Show, my recent Music That Matters podcast, and this week’s Song of the Day Podcasts.
Today's pick is "Bad FanFiction" by Persons From Porlock from a 2016 self-released single.
Persons From Porlock - Bad FanFiction (MP3) As a DJ, I’m always thinking about how I’m going to bust a new song I’m excited about-- what I’m going to mix it with, and on first listen to Persons From Porlock’s “Bad Fanfiction,” with it’s energetic jangly guitar riffs, I knew it would be the Cure’s “Push.” A young band from Ljubljana, Slovenia, their debut album, Things People Don’t Like, was voted the #1 Slovenian album of 2016 by Radio Študent, one of Europe's oldest and most respected non-commercial, alternative radio stations. “Bad Fanfiction,” a newer song, leans more alterna-rock guitar pop. Live, however, they were much more expansive, playing trippy neo psychedelic rock that only enhanced the surreal surroundings at Metelkova, a cultural center in Ljubljana that was the former site of the Yugoslav National Army military barracks until art punk squatters “occupied” the space turning every inch of it into an indulgence of color, shapes, and imagination run wild.
