Uk band The Horrors return with their fifth LP; KEXP Music Director Don Yates calls it "an expansive blend of brooding electro-rock, industrialized post-punk, shoegazerish space-rock and more, combining a majestic, adventurous sound with some of the band's most assured songwriting to date." Australian band Cut Copy also hit album #5 (and their first in four years) "a potent set of buoyant, '80s-steeped dance-pop inflected with disco, Afrobeat and other styles, combining bright synths, propulsive beats, psychedelic textures, occasional tropical rhythms and soaring harmonies while juxtaposing sunny melodies with often-dark and dystopian lyrics."
Malian couple Amadou & Mariam return with their eighth studio album (and first in five years); the new release "adds some synth gloss and electronic beats to their driving blend of Malian desert blues and various other African styles, while still sounding as earthy and soulful as ever." On her sixth LP, Sacramento-based artist Chelsea Wolfe heads "further into heavy doom-metal territory while still making room for some goth-tinged folk, spooky electro-pop and more." British band The Clientele re-emerge with sixth album (and first full album in eight years) "an often-gorgeous set of autumnal, psych-tinged folk-pop, combining a beautifully arranged orchestral pop sound with Alisdair MacLean's hushed vocals, bittersweet melodies and finely chiseled lyrics." And Hiss Golden Messenger, the Durham, NC-based project spearheaded by M.C. Taylor, releases "another well-crafted set of soulful folk-rock, combining a warm sound with sharply crafted lyrics of hope for light in the darkness."
