The True Loves have rapidly become among the best soul/funk live acts in the city of Seattle. Following a tenure working with Ms. Grace Love, The True Loves released their debut record in 2017, titled Famous Last Words. They continue to thrill as a live band, and were an ideal kick off to the last day of KEXP's Upstream broadcast. Featuring a four piece horn section, two percussionists, guitarist Jimmy James, and bassist Bryant Moore, the True Loves impeccably execute the grooves and riffs that fill their debut record.
Starting off with an unreleased cut, "Sunday Afternoon," True Loves sounded tight and precise, but maintaining the spontaneous spirit of the great funk collectives of the 1960's and 70's. This was followed by Famous Last Words's "Shambling," and an addiitonal unreleased cut titled "Kabuki." On the titular "Famous Last Words," bandleader Jimmy James counted off the brass section, who responded in rhythmic bursts of noise. The group consistently put on quite a show, making complex grooves feel effortless.
