Last week, a Redditor leaked news that Animal Collective would be dropping a new album titled Tangerine Reef this summer. Today, the album was officially announced and the lead single, “Hair Cutter,” was shared. Avey Tare, Geologist, and Deakin (no Panda Bear on this one) collaborated with Coral Morphologic, a duo consisting of a marine biologist and musician that specialize in “avant-garde coral macro-videography” to make the audiovisual album. An Apple Music-exclusive video for “Hair Cutter” has been shared, as well as a short album preview visual. Tangerine Reef is out August 17 via Domino, and the full-length album film will be for sale on the band’s website on the same day. [ SPIN ]
Father John Misty released his fourth studio album, God’s Favorite Customer, last month. Over the weekend, he shared a video for the song “Date Night.” Directed by Chad VanGaalen, the animated video depicts colorful monsters glued to their phones. The clip follows the videos for “Mr. Tillman,” “God’s Favorite Customer”, and “Please Don’t Die.” God’s Favorite Customer follows last year’s Pure Comedy. Stuart McLamb’s indie project The Love Language is releasing his fourth album, Baby Grand, on August 3 via Merge. Today, he’s shared the fourth single from the album, “Juiceboxx,” following “Castle in the Sky,” “Southern Doldrums,” and “New Amsterdam.” McLamb also announced a competition for remixing “Juiceboxx” where the winning remix will be featured on Merge’s official Soundcloud page. The winner will also receive a test pressing of Baby Grand, a copy of Ruby Red, that album's Black Mtn Demos on cassette, and a Merge tote. [ Under the Radar ]
Nashville’s Bully have shared a video for “Guess There,” off of last year’s Losing. Directed by Aleia Murawski and Samuel Copeland, the video focuses on a lonely snail, as he goes about his daily routine, including drinking coffee, playing basketball, hanging with his pet hamster, and playing video games. The clip follows the videos for “Feel The Same” and “Running.” Losing follows the band’s 2015 debut Feels Like and is out now via Sub Pop. Speaking of snails, over the weekend Snail Mail and Waxahatchee teamed up to cover Sheryl Crow’s “Strong Enough” at a show at Philadelphia’s Union Transfer. Snail Mail (aka Lindsey Jordan) is currently on tour behind Lush, her debut album. Jordan brought Waxahatchee (aka Katie Crutchfield) on stage with the introduction, “This is for all the heteros, thank you,” before launching into Crow’s 1995 hit. Waxahatchee will be in Seattle on Monday, October 8 to open for Courtney Barnett at the Paramount Theatre. [ The Fader ]
