Steven Ellison, better known to the public as Flying Lotus, has announced his first album in five years, Flamagra. Due for release on May 24 via Warp Records, the massive 27-track record features a number of high-profile contributions including Shabazz Palaces, Solange, George Clinton, Tierra Whack, Anderson .Paak, Thundercat, Little Dragon, Toro Y Moi, Denzel Curry, and David Lynch.
The album also features multiple songs made in tribute to Mac Miller, as Ellison explains:
"This album has been a refuge for pain and trying to make the most out of that pain. Music can heal and in the wake of that tragedy it reminded me what I’m here to do. As we get older, we start to figure out what our purpose is and embrace it and I want to do good things with my work. I want it to be able to help people through tough times and inspire them to be creative."
Alongside the announcement, FlyLo has shared the Lynch-featuring track “Fire Is Coming,” that sees Lynch regale a tale of a boy named Tommy over the sinister soundscape. The song is delivered via a bizarre video by David Firth, of Salad Fingers fame, that sees a rambunctious group of wolf children gather around an elder wolf, with Lynch’s face popping out of the wolf’s mouth.
Flying Lotus’ last album was 2014’s You’re Dead! He shares more thoughts on the genesis of the record:
"I’d been working on stuff for the past five years, but it was always all over the place. I’d always had this thematic idea in mind — a lingering concept about fire, an eternal flame sitting on a hill. Some people love it, some people hate it. Some people would go on dates there and some people would burn love letters in the fire."
