Lackadaisical lofi hero Mac DeMarco is releasing his fourth studio album, Here Comes the Cowboy, this Friday, May 10. Today, he’s shared the third and final single off the record, “On the Square,” via an incredibly surreal and slightly disturbing video directed by William Sipos and Sean Campos.
Donned in a white mask and a suite, DeMarco takes a stage with a birdbath of milk. Only one man is in the theatre, played by Tommy Midnight, but he is weirdly invested in this strange performance art. DeMarco dunks his head into the milk and enters another world where creepy suited animal-men are laying bricks and greet DeMarco with a gentle nod. It’s incredibly Lynchian and also completely contradicts the downtempo, intimate song. Sipos had this to say about the clip.
“This video has been my most intimate experience with milk yet. At one point I had Mac in a latex mask, shivering in a kiddie pool filled with cold milk. I did not feel like a nice person.”
“On the Square” follows previous singles “All of Our Yesterdays” and “Nobody.” Here Comes the Cowboy follows 2017’s This Old Dog and will be released via DeMarco’s self-run label aptly titled Mac’s Record Label. DeMarco will play a three-night stint in Seattle this weekend, May 11-13 at the Showbox SoDo, with a special performance at the KEXP Gathering Space on Monday, May 13 at noon. It’s free and open to the public.
