Memory can be a slippery thing, but some stick with you for ages. Such is the case in the track "Amy" by Brooklyn-via-Tacoma duo Widowspeak, a dreamy piece of electro-pop that has guitarist/vocalist Molly Hamilton reflecting on this mysterious woman who was "like your mom was there for you."
"Amy had been my babysitter when I was pretty young, and was fired when she couldn't pick me up from a class one day," remembers Hamilton. "She sent a friend instead but I refused to go with a stranger, and I just waited for hours at this empty dance building until someone else came. I felt guilty about being the reason she left, and even now the random small details about her that I think I remember vividly (listening to No Doubt in her old brown car) are tied up with this feeling of disloyalty. So, the song's about what I remember, but it's also about how childhood memories can be unreliable even when they are so vivid."
In the accompanying music video, directed by OTIUM, they capture the haziness that memory can sometimes hold.
“The aim of the video was to create a sense of mystery similar to the way a child might see an adult's life or view someone like a babysitter’s life outside of the time they spend with the child. To give that imaginative sense of a world that you aren’t old enough to experience. A kind of conspiratorial understanding that there is some big secret out there for you to discover.”
"Amy" can be found on Widowspeak's fifth and latest LP Plum, out now via Captured Tracks.
