Immigrant Songs: Terror/Cactus

A few years back word started getting around that there was a Seattle group making modern electronic cumbia and performing as a live band. This kind of project isn’t that unusual in many places in the world, but for this city it is definitely a special treat. Terror/Cactus isn’t just unique because they’re based in Seattle though. The music has a tight blend of instrumental guitar-focused grooves with live and electronic percussion and synths that really creates heady transportive, but fun moods.

Terror/Cactus is a project of Martín Selasco, a Buenos Aires-born and Seattle-based musician and producer, who performs live either by himself or with a band made up of a cool rotating cast of local artists. The live shows are captivating, with the members donning masks and backed-up by a great light show, and the experimental and trippy fusion of flavors makes them perfect for bills with other artists of many different genres.

After two wonderful LPs: Cerro Invisible and Impulsos the end of 2019 brought us the EP called Corriente. The release finds the project in fine form. Martín’s beats and production sounds are better than ever and match the guitar playing perfectly. Each track takes you on a different journey and you can hear that creative Terror/Cactus sound really shining through.

Terror/Cactus stopped by KEXP for an incredible live set featuring Martín alongside Seattle percussionist David French. After they played tracks from the Corriente EP Martín sat down with us to talk more about the project and his life as an immigrant musician creating music that spans genres and locations. Martín moved from Argentina as young child to Miami and then to Seattle in his teens. He grew up in a musical family with both his grandfather and father having their own record labels and exposing him to a large variety of Latin American music from a young age. His multicultural history and knowledge with an array of Latin genres plus his immersion into the rock scene of the Pacific Northwest helped create something special that draws a path from both ends of the Americas and moves people from around the globe. The result is a continuation of the Latin American folk lineage with both urban and rural sensibilities that is also uniquely Seattle.

Hace unos años se corrió la voz que había un grupo de Seattle haciendo cumbia electrónica moderna y presentándose como banda en vivo. Este tipo de proyectos no es tan inusual en muchos lugares del mundo, pero para esta ciudad definitivamente es un regalo especial. Terror/Cactus no solo es único porque tienen su sede en Seattle. Su música tiene una mezcla apretada de ritmos instrumentales centrados en la guitarra junto a percusiones en vivo y música electrónica con sintetizadores que realmente crean un ambiente embriagador pero divertido. Terror/Cactus es un proyecto de Martín Selasco, un músico y productor nacido en Buenos Aires (Argentina) con actual base en Seattle. Toca en vivo ya sea solo o con banda, la que esta compuesta por un elenco rotativo de artistas locales.

Los espectáculos en vivo son cautivadores con sus miembros portando máscaras y respaldados por un gran espectáculo de luces que potencian la fusión experimental y flashera de sabores, haciendolos perfectos para tocar con artistas de diversos géneros musicales. Después de dos maravillosos LP: Cerro Invisible e Impulsos, a fines de 2019 llegó el EP Corriente. El lanzamiento encuentra al proyecto en un muy buen momento. Los ritmos y sonidos producidos por Martín son mejores que nunca y se combinan perfectamente con la guitarra. Cada pista te lleva a un viaje diferente y puedes escuchar ese sonido creativo de Terror/Cactus brillando.

Terror/Cactus paró en KEXP para un realizar un increíble set en vivo a cargo de Martín y el percusionista local David French. Después de tocar temas del EP Corriente, Martín se sentó con nosotros para hablar aun más sobre el proyecto y sobre su vida como músico inmigrante creando sonoridades que abarcan géneros y ubicaciones. Martín se mudó de Argentina a Miami  cuando era niño y luego a Seattle durante su adolescencia. Creció en una familia musical con su abuelo y su padre teniendo sus propios sellos discográficos y exponiéndolo a una gran variedad de música latinoamericana desde temprana edad.

Su historia multicultural, su vasto conocimiento de géneros latinos y su inmersión en la escena rockera del Noroeste del Pacífico, ayudaron a crear algo especial que dibuja un camino desde ambos extremos de las Américas y moviendo a personas de todo el mundo. El resultado es una continuación del linaje popular latinoamericano con sensibilidades tanto urbanas como periféricas que también son propias y unicas de Seattle.
