With #PlayingAtMyHouse, each week KEXP will announce a music-related theme to our audience and ask our listeners for examples of each theme by sharing songs on social media with #playingatmyhouse. But it’s more than just sharing songs. Our hope is people will take it as an opportunity to interact with each other by sharing opinions, recommendations based on other people’s picks, memories attached to the songs, or whatever else may come up for you. This week's theme is soundtracks.
It’s hard to find a better pairing than music and movies. While they can certainly exist without one another, when they come together it’s a match made in celluloid heaven. And we’re not just talking about all the fantastic scores and orchestral works that composers create to highlight the emotions in a scene (shout out to John Williams though).
Soundtrack compilations are pop culture forces in themselves and sometimes even become definitive for entire generations. It can range from the devil may care rebellion of Easy Rider through Zach Braff’s indie rock mixtape of Garden State, or heck even (or perhaps, especially) The O.C. soundtrack. The right song in the right scene can be transcendent, capturing our imaginations and putting a strong visual image in our psyches whenever we hear the song down the road.
What soundtracks or songs from a movie have impacted you? Share with us on social using the #PlayingAtMyHouse hashtag or comment on our posts on KEXP’s Facebook and Instagram pages. Bonus points if you can recall a specific scene or memory attached the music. We have some highlights below to get you started. And heads up, potential spoilers below.
